Milan Mayor Comments on San Siro Plans

Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala has given his verdict on the city’s new stadium plans in the San Siro district – for both the Rossoneri and Nerazzurri.

The city council are yet to provide the green light for a new state of the art facility that both clubs believe will help propel them to new heights on the European podium. Both Elliott Management and Suning Holdings Group, which own the two Milan giants respectively, are said to be confident about the project to materialize soon enough.

However, municipal elections and Italian bureaucracy have been major diversions for the project to even start taking shape.

In the midst of all these, Beppe Sala spoke an event (via MilanLive) and spoke about stadium plans and ruled out the idea that the current stadium could co-exist with a new one.

“The cost to maintain the stadium is enormous and if we say that we use the old San Siro for the national teams, I want to see how the other cities respond. Such an important structure must be used. The only thing I would feel is excluded is the use of the two stadiums,” he said.

The diverse San Siro district is particularly known for its wide paths and 20th century architecture – among which the Giuseppe Meazza stadium stands as an icon of footballing glory, ever since it was first opened in 1926.
