Tottenham have made significant progress in their pursuit of Cristian Romero. The defender has agreed to personal terms with the Spurs on a five-year contract, plus an optional sixth one. The London-based club improved their bid, but Atalanta have not accepted it yet, Gianluca Di Marzio reports.
Tottenham offered €40/45M plus €10M add-ons, which comes close to the Bergamaschi’s price tag. Romero would instead earn €3M per season, Nicolò Schira informs. Even after the two sides come to terms, the deal might take some time to be completed. Technically, Atalanta first has to pick up their €16M option to permanently buy the defender from Juventus before selling him.
The 23-year-old defender moved to Serie A in 2018, joining Genoa from Belgrano. He was acquired by the Bianconeri the following summer for €26M, but he stayed with Grifone. He transferred to the Orobici on an initial loan in the past offseason. Romero has accumulated 88 appearances in Serie A, scoring 5 goals and providing 8 assists. He has 5 caps with Argentina and participated in the recent Copa America, making the top XI of the tournament.
If Romero went to Tottenham, Atalanta would be in the market for a new defender. They will try to complete another signing from Juventus, as they are keen on Merih Demiral. They are also tracking Lille’s Sven Botman, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs. In recent days they had displayed interest in Spezia’s Martin Erlic, whom Sassuolo covet as well, Tuttomercatoweb relays.
