Inter and Juventus Request to Move Supercoppa Gets Denied

The Supercoppa between Inter and Juventus will take place as scheduled on January 12th. The Serie A council unanimously turned down the proposal to postpone it. The League would have had to wait to see how the two teams fared in the cups before picking a new date.

The body is formed by Cagliari and Verona’s presidents Tommaso Giulini and Maurizio Setti, Milan chairman Paolo Scaroni and Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi. Serie A head Paolo Dal Pino and federal concilours Giuseppe Marotta and Claudio Lotito attended the meeting Sunday.

Serie A remains strongly averse to moving games unless impossible to do otherwise, Tuttosport informs. They also confirmed the next two rounds coming up later in the week. A few teams called for a postponement as they are dealing with multiple COVID-19 cases.

Instead, Inter and Juventus asked to reschedule the clash for monetary reasons. The Italian government reduced the capacity of stadiums from 75 percent to half. The previous match between the two sides at San Siro was the highest-grossing one of the season, yielding €5M. The 38k attendance, down from 57k, will be split between the two fan bases.

Over 50 Serie A players are currently in the Coronavirus protocol. However, the League plans to forge ahead. The large majority got infected while away from teams during the holidays. Edin Dzeko, Giorgio Chiellini, and Arthur are the biggest names that tested positive for Inter and Juventus, but they might be back before the Supercoppa.

The Italian cabinet recently cut down the isolation period for vaccinated people. In a few days, footballers that have not received any dose will not be able to participate in team activities. An estimate says they are 25/30.
