Cagliari Pick Youth Coach Agostini to Replace Mazzarri

Cagliari have officially sacked Walter Mazzarri and promoted Primavera coach Alessandro Agostini. The Sardinians pulled the same move as Venezia, which elevated Andrea Soncin to substitute Paolo Zanetti last week. It is their second coaching change of the season and the tenth overall in Serie A in 2021-2022. The veteran gaffer had taken over from Leonardo Semplici in the early going.

The Tuscan manager grabbed the reins after three matches and collected 27 points in 32 games. He recorded 6 wins, 10 draws, and 19 losses. The Rossoblù are currently in 17th place, with a narrow lead over Salernitana. The Granata could overtake them if they won Thursday’s make-up fixture against Venezia. The two sides will then square off over the weekend. Inter and the Lagunari are next on the schedule for the Sardinians to finish the campaign.

Cagliari moved on from Mazzarri after the loss to Verona. It was their seventh in the past eight matchdays, where they won only versus Sassuolo at home. They had found consistency in January and February but fell back into a slump afterward.

Agostini is a club veteran as he played nine seasons for the Rossoblù from 2004 to 2012, racking up 298 appearances. He remained part of the outfit in various coaching positions after retiring. According to Alfredo Pedullà, Cagliari fired Mazzarri despite a clause that would automatically extend his contract until 2024 if he got the ax while the team was not in one of the bottom three positions. Moreover, he is receiving above-average wages. Therefore, it was an expensive decision by the club.
