Spalletti Cuts Starter in Italy Call-Ups Versus Ukraine

Luciano Spalletti has issued the final squad list for the Ukraine game. Italy need to avoid losing to finish second and qualify for Euro 2024 directly without going through the playoff. The most notable exclusion is Domenico Berardi. He started against North Macedonia but had an underwhelming performance.

The others joining him in the stands are Marco Carnesecchi, Manuel Lazzari, Andrea Cambiaso, and Andrea Colpani, Gianluca Di Marzio reports. Gugliemo Vicario has shaken off the flu and will be on the bench. Giovanni Di Lorenzo cleared his disqualification and will start. Matteo Darmian and Cristiano Biraghi will be the backup fullbacks. The Monza star was called up for the first time but won’t be given the chance to debut this time either.

The Italy boss will make a few changes relative to the previous lineup but won’t overhaul it. Davide Frattesi is expected to get the nod over Giacomo Bonaventura in the midfield. The main doubts are between Gianluca Mancini and Federico Gatti in the back and Giacomo Scamacca and Giacomo Raspadori as the no.9.

The two players that weren’t in the XI on Friday are currently the favorites. Matteo Politano is likely to substitute for Berardi on the right wing. Nicolò Zaniolo should begin on the bench again. Italy can’t count on Alessandro Bastoni, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Mattia Zaccagni, Giorgio Scalvini, Mateo Retegui, Manuel Locatelli, Davide Calabria, and Rafael Toloi due to injury.
