Mason Greenwood will not move to Serie A this summer despite being heavily linked with Juventus and Lazio in the past few weeks. As per Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United and Marseille have agreed on a deal for the 22-year-old to continue his career at the Stade Velodrome.
Greenwood emerged as a concrete target for Lazio last summer. Club president Claudio Lotito was desperate to sign the left-footed forward on loan. But Getafe beat him to the punch. The youngster repaid the Spaniards’ trust with a superb La Liga campaign.
In his debut season in Spain, Greenwood tallied ten goals and six assists across all competitions. His scintillating form at Getafe saw Lazio reignite their interest in the Englishman. However, Biancocelesti’s long-term dream of signing the Manchester United cast away has collapsed again.
With Lazio unprepared to part with hefty figures to snap Greenwood up, Marseille spotted the window of opportunity. Quick to react on this market chance, Roberto De Zerbi’s men have convinced the Red Devils to offload their homegrown starlet in a blitz.
In addition to tabling a sizeable £27 million bid, Marseille have agreed to include a substantial sell-on clause close to 50% of the future sale. Erik ten Hag’s charges accepted the offer in a heartbeat, forcing Lazio to look for other options to strengthen Marco Baroni’s depleted frontline.
After losing Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson, Lazio must recruit fresh blood up front. Meanwhile, Lotito rubbished speculation linking Ciro Immobile with Besiktas on Tuesday.
