Atalanta Closing In On Deal to Sign Prodigious Spanish Right-Back

Europa League winners Atalanta are on the cusp of completing another lightning-fast deal after securing Mateo Retegui’s signature. According to Fabrizio Romano, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have seen their offer for Marc Pubill accepted by Almeria, with the official announcement expected soon.

Atalanta have agreed to pay the Spanish minnows €20 million, including add-ons, to bring the highly-rated right-back to the Gewiss Stadium. Almeria will also have a handsome 15% sell-on clause. That’s a massive deal for a team that suffered relegation from La Liga last term.

However, Atalanta will likely have to wait a few more days to announce Pubill’s arrival. The 21-year-old will not fly to Italy yet. He’s currently with his national team at the 2024 Olympic Games in France, with Spain taking on the host nation in the heavily anticipated match for gold on Friday.

Once the tournament ends, he’ll pen a multi-year contract in Bergamo. Pubill will become a fifth summer signing for Atalanta. Before clinching a €22m deal for Retegui, La Dea had landed Ben Godfrey, Ibrahim Sulemana, and Nicolo Zaniolo.

Such a proactive approach testifies to the club’s ambition to make a genuine Scudetto push in 2024/25. But it’s not all rosy for Atalanta by any stretch of the imagination. They face an imminent risk of losing standout midfielder Teun Koompeiners to Juventus.

Gasperini recently confirmed the Dutch star’s desire to join the Turin outfit, intensifying Juve’s hopes of closing their long-term pursuit of the ex-AZ Alkmaar playmaker.
