Napoli Weighing Up Late Swoop for Ex-Bologna Midfielder

Struggling Serie A giants Napoli have reportedly set their sights on PSV Eindhoven midfielder Jerdy Schouten. According to reports from the Netherlands, Antonio Conte’s men are willing to splash out between €20-30 million for the 27-year-old.

It’s not been the summer Napoli fans were hoping for. However, there’s still time to repair the damage. With the Partenopei edging closer to bringing Chelsea flop Romelu Lukaku back to Serie A, Conte is keen to reinforce his depleted midfield.

Napoli have taken an interest in Manchester United’s Scott McTominay. But talks with the Red Devils have hit a brick wall, forcing the three-time Italian champions to search for alternatives. Schouten has emerged as a decent fallback option for Conte’s side.

The Dutch midfielder left Bologna last summer to join PSV. He helped the Eindhoven powerhouse lift the Eredivisie title in his first season at the club. It could turn out to be his last. Napoli will reportedly reassess their options before intensifying talks with the Peasants.

Schouten isn’t the only player on Conte’s shortlist. But he’s the most viable target, considering Manchester United’s reluctance to drop their valuation of McTominay. In the meantime, Napoli are looking to offload Michael Folorunsho, who has plenty of suitors in Serie A.

Even if they fail to sell the Italian, Napoli will try to sign a new midfielder, especially following a humiliating 3-0 loss to Hellas Verona at the start of the 2024/25 season. Conte’s team will try to bounce back when they take on Bologna on Sunday night.
