Inter talisman Lautaro Martinez chipped in with an assist for Federico Dimarco in Sunday’s derby loss to Milan. Simone Inzaghi’s team slumped to an unexpected 2-1 defeat against a side they had beaten in six consecutive matches beforehand.
Martinez was the central figure of Nerazzurri’s landmark 20th Scudetto last season. The Argentine forward enjoyed a phenomenal season, winning the Capocannoniere award as Serie A’s top scorer to help Inter steamroll to the title.
However, the 27-year-old has stuttered at the beginning of the new season. Indeed, he has yet to score in Serie A after five rounds. It’s an unusual scoring duck for the Inter superstar, and he realizes he needs to work harder to get back in shape.
As for the derby, Martinez concedes Inter failed to approach the match with the right mindset, which eventually cost them dearly.
“We did not do the game we had prepared for, we did not approach it well,” the Inter captain told DAZN, as reported by TMW. “We did a little better in the second half, but we have to improve a lot. Lower our heads and pedal to raise the level, I’m first as captain of the team.
“I know I’m late compared to last year, but I’ll be the first to arrive in Appiano to work and improve together with the team.“
Martinez will not have to wait long for redemption as Inter head to the Bluenergy Stadium to meet Udinese next Saturday.
