Inter Set To Offload One Of The Two Defensive Stalwarts At The End Of The Season

Reigning Serie A champions Inter plot to overhaul their defensive options at the end of the 2024/25 season. According to Calciomercato via FCInter1908, one of Stefan de Vrij or Francesco Acerbi will leave Giuseppe Meazza next summer.

Inter manager Simone Inzaghi has become famous for his 3-5-2 formation. Therefore, he has six center-backs at his disposal. In addition to Acerbi and De Vrij, Benjamin Pavard, Alessandro Bastoni, Yann Bisseck, and Tomas Palacios are the other alternatives.

The latter joined Inter from his native Argentina in the summer but has yet to make a competitive debut for the Nerazzurri. On the other hand, Bisseck looks ready to take his career to the next level and assume a more prominent role in Inzaghi’s set-up.

With Acerbi turning 37 in February, he’s the leading candidate to leave Inter. However, De Vrij’s contract at Meazza also runs out in June 2025, and he has yet to open renewal talks with the club. One of the two will probably stay, though, as Inzaghi doesn’t want to lose continuity.

Since De Vrij is 32, he has a better chance of landing a new deal than Acerbi. Both players have been vital for Inter in the past few years, yet it’s time for the 20-time Italian champions to inject fresh blood into their aging line-up.

Indeed, Inter will likely return to the transfer market for young talent to rejuvenate their squad, knowing that relying on aging players could hinder the team’s long-term success. Meanwhile, they’re close to tying Denzel Dumfries down to a new deal.
