Luciano Spalletti has named the provisional 30-man Italy squad for the Euro 2024. Barring injuries, four players will be cut down before the start of the tournament. The coach has picked Nicolò Fagioli, who just returned from an eight-month suspension, over his Juventus teammate Manuel Locatelli, La Repubblica points out.

He’ll compete with Torino’s Samuele Ricci and Hellas Verona’s Michael Folorunsho. The top options have been the same for a while there. Jorginho made the cut, while Fiorentina’s Giacomo Bonaventura didn’t due to an underwhelming end to the season.
Without Nicolò Zaniolo and Domenico Berardi, the Italy boss picked Riccardo Orsolini and Matteo Zaccagni over Matteo Politano on the wings. Giacomo Raspadori was always a lock even though he didn’t have a great year. Ciro Immobile misses out as expected. Mateo Retegui and especially Gianluca Scamacca have been in much better shape.
Ivan Provedel has been selected over Marco Carnesecchi and Michele Di Gregorio. He will compete with Alex Meret to be the third-stringer. Destiny Udogie is absent due to injury. Sandro Tonali because of a suspension.

Locatelli has been lackluster for a few years, so it was probably between him and Jorginho, who’s the only pure regista. The relatively shallow midfield and frontline suggest Spalletti will try to lean on 3-4-2-1 rather than 4-3-3 despite his past. The different scheme might come naturally to several contributors but had mixed results in the most recent tests.
