Ajax Take Interest in Exiled Juventus Stalwart Bonucci

Ajax have gotten in touch with Leonardo Bonucci, whom Juventus ousted at the beginning of the summer. His agent Alessandro Lucci stated that they were looking for a worthy destination, even though the defender hadn’t completely given up on trying to work his way back into the squad.

According to Calciomercato, the Dutch side wants the former Bianconeri captain also for a mentoring role. He and his camp haven’t shut the door. Further contacts will take place next week to explore the terms.

Before Ajax came into the picture, Bonucci reportedly rejected proposals from Al-Shabab, Los Angeles FC, and a few Serie B sides, such as Sampdoria, Bari, Palermo, and Pisa. Juventus would have had to contribute heavily to his wages if he moved to the second division.

The defender has Lazio, Roma, and Newcastle atop his preferences, but his interest hasn’t been reciprocated, at least at this stage. He’s due €3.5M in the final year of his contract with the Old Lady.

Our Take on Bonucci and Ajax

It would be a pretty good destination, as it wouldn’t be a big demotion, and he’d continue playing in Europe for a prestigious club. But he might wait it out until the final days of the window when unexpected opportunities usually arise. For instance, the Giallorossi might seek a defender if the sale of Roger Ibanez goes through.
