Juventus and Milan shared the spoils at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday night in a tense, hard-fought Serie A clash, drawing 1-1. Alvaro Morata gave the hosts an early lead after just four minutes, but Ante Rebic restored the stalemate in the final stage.
Though Milan saw their 100% start to this Serie A campaign come to a halt, the Rossoneri can be pleased with their performance in Turin. Stefano Pioli’s side paid the ultimate price for a tumultuous start, as Morata caught the visitors’ backline napping and showed composure to finish a one-on-one situation with Mike Maignan.
Juventus’ early advantage was a wake-up call for Milan. Last season’s Serie A runners-up bounced back from a massive shock and started the put pressure on the Bianconeri defense. However, Brahim Diaz and co struggled to create many clear-cut chances in the first half despite enjoying more possession and keeping Juve deep inside their own territory.
Milan’s unrelenting pressure paid off in the 76th minute. Sandro Tonali whipped the ball in from the corner, and Rebic headed it home off the right post. Pioli’s side nearly turned the tables on Juventus, but Wojciech Szczesny pulled off a stunning save to deny Pierre Kalulu from point-blank range.
Alessio Romagnoli, who is returning to his former heights, put in an eye-catching performance, allowing Juventus forward almost no space to work with. The captain hailed his side’s response after a sluggish start in the aftermath.
“We weren’t very good at the beginning, but then we were good at reacting. Now let’s think about Venezia. We know that at Anfield, we could have done better, today we did well to make up for it. After we played a great match,” he told DAZN, as relayed by MilanNews.
“I try to give my best and put the coach in difficulty, then he makes the choices.“
Romagnoli also believes that this is the strongest Milan side since his arrival from Roma in 2015.
“This is certainly one of the strongest AC Milan’s since I’ve been here, for 7 years now. The season is long, we enjoy the moment and stay focused. Let’s continue like this.”
