Carlo Ancelotti has never forgotten the 2005 Champions League final, although he claims it remains a ‘not-so-vivid’ memory. Don Carlo was in charge of the Rossoneri that fateful night in Istanbul, and his team were cruising to victory against Liverpool. They led 3-0 at half-time, but Liverpool staged an incredible comeback to win 3-3 in normal time and then 3-2 on penalties.
Speaking to the microphones of Amazon Prime Video (via MilanNews) ahead of his Real Madrid’s second leg semi-final against Manchester City, Ancelotti revealed he would go back if he could change things.
“Istanbul is the only final lost for me and it remains a not so vivid memory. Of course, it would be nice to go back. I have seen it many times. We played very well. It would have been the best final played by one of my team in a Champions League final.”
That, infact, is the only UCL final the veteran has lost in the span of his almost thirty-year managerial career, having won in 2003 & 2007 with Milan, and 2014 & 2022 with Real Madrid. Ancelotti has the chance to add a fifth title to his illustrious career, which would extend his lead to two more than English football icon Bob Paisley, who won three with Liverpool in the late 1970’s.
