Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti believes Inter are not favorites to progress against Benfica in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. However, he does think that the Nerazzurri can redeem their roller-coaster season with a positive result in the two legs.
The former Milan boss gave an exclusive talk to Rai Radio 1 (via FCInterNews), and along with his say on the Champions League, he also spoke of Napoli breaking the hegemony in Italy.
“On paper, the Portuguese are better and have done very well both in the Champions League and domestically. They are solid. Inter, who are not favourites, have the possibility of redeeming a fluctuating season.”
Ancelotti also shed light on how competitive Serie A has turned out to be in recent seasons, as Napoli are enroute to becoming the fourth team to win a Scudetto in the last four seasons.
“It makes the fans have more passion. Juventus’ hegemony in recent years reduced it, so there is more uncertainty now. Italian football, amid many difficulties, has led three teams to the quarter-finals Champions League, and that’s no small thing.”
His Real Madrid take on Chelsea in the quarters, whereas the other ties see Manchester City face Bayern Munich and his former side Milan take on Napoli. In a remarkable feat, Ancelotti has managed all sides in the quarter finals except City, Benfica and Inter.
