Belgian giants Anderlecht have reportedly contacted Milan to gather information about prodigious defender Jan-Carlo Simic. Italian journalist Matteo Moretto claims the clubs have held exploratory talks over the possibility of the youngster moving to the Jupiler Pro League to gain experience.
Though the nature of the deal remains uncertain, it would probably be a loan switch. Milan cannot afford to cut loose one of the most promising center-backs in Europe. Simic is only 19, yet he showcased his incredible potential and leadership skills with the Primavera team last term.
Former Milan coach Stefano Pioli even used him sporadically amid an injury crisis midway through the 2023/24 campaign. And it was a resounding success, with the Serbian starlet even scoring on his Serie A debut against Monza as the Rossoneri ran out 3-0 victors.
Unfortunately, the Milan hierarchy has deemed Simic too young to become a regular starter at the Stadio San Siro. But they’d be naive to let him go permanently. Therefore, it’s more likely that they’d angle for a loan move without a buyout option.
The Belgian championship has proved a fertile ground for talents, and it makes sense if Milan decide to let Simic join Anderlecht on a season-long loan. But no one would blame Paulo Fonseca if he pulled the plug on a deal and kept the young gun in Lombardia instead.
There’s a shortage of defensive options at Milan after Simon Kjaer’s departure at the end of last season. The Serie A runners-up are in talks with RB Salzburg over Strahinja Pavlovic to fill that void. The Serbian’s arrival would probably result in Simic’s exit.
