Another 2006 World Cup Champion Finds Work in Serie B

After seeking a bench for a couple of years and being linked to a few Serie A jobs, Daniele De Rossi has found one, as SPAL teased the hiring by tweeting a modification of his iconic leg tattoo Monday. He will replace Roberto Venturato.

As per SportMediaset, owner Joe Tacopina swayed the former Roma midfielder, and he signed a contract until 2024. The Estensi are currently 14th in Serie B. They have collected two wins, three draws, and three losses in the first eight rounds.

De Rossi will debut as the new SPAL gaffer against Cittadella Saturday. He retired in 2020 following a short stint at Boca Juniors after spending 18 years with the Giallorossi. He was among the Italy assistants in Euro 2020. After a brief pause to pursue a head-coaching job, he reprised the role in January 2022. Long-time Lecce staple Guillermo Giacomazzi will be part of his staff.

He becomes the fourth 2006 World Cup champion currently in the second Italian division. Gianluigi Buffon continues to play at Parma. Reggina and Frosinone hired Filippo Inzaghi and Fabio Grosso in the summer. Fabio Cannavaro took over Benevento about a month ago.

De Rossi is familiar with SPAL chairman Tacopina as the latter served as the Roma vice-president from 2011 to 2014 during the Thomas DiBenedetto era. He then acquired Bologna alongside Joey Caputo, but he left after just a year. He governed Venezia from 2015 to 2020. Finally, the tycoon bought the Ferraresi in July 2021. They finished 15th last season.
