Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti has given his say on the Lionel Messi – Diego Maradona debate, claiming that the duo are on the same level with each other in terms of greatness. Messi is one win away from etching his name into history books, as Argentina prepare to face France in the 2022 World Cup final on Sunday.
However, the legendary wingback’s opinion of Messi will not change depending on the result of the final.
“Many things worry me about France, they are really strong. Argentina is playing the World Cup at Messi’s level, not ‘Maradonian’. Leo is on the same level as Diego, on par. And this judgment will not change depending on the result of the final.” (via TuttoNapoli)
Zanetti then revealed that he is eager for his nation’s 36-year drought to end this weekend.
“It’s the most important match, we face the world champions, the Argentine people have a big dream. Messi is very focused and more and more of a leader, now he makes the difference also in terms of character.”
Argentina have not lifted the coveted trophy since the days of Maradona back in 1986, whereas reigning champions France seek to become only the second nation in history to win back-to-back World Cup titles, after Brazil in 1962.
