Lionel Messi missed a first-half penalty, but Argentina still dominated Poland, winning 2-0 in the final match of the group stage. Despite Poland’s defense essentially parking the bus for the entire 90 minutes, Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez scored second-half goals that ensured Argentina’s place on top of Group C.
Emiliano Martinez – 7
With Poland managing just four shots, Martinez had practically nothing to do all game. However, he distributed the ball well and kept Argentina’s tempo high.
Cristian Romero – 8
As Argentina needed to add height to the backline, Romero slotted in as the second centre-back. He had a straightforward night, as Robert Lewandowski rarely got on the ball.
Nicolas Otamendi – 8
Otamendi played an aggressive game, using his physicality well against Poland’s forwards. He made numerous quality challenges and supported Romero against Lewandowski.
Marcos Acuna – 7
In the first half, Acuna was electric in the left channel. He made several ventures forward, helping create a handful of chances for the favorites. After a quiet start to the second half, Nicolas Tagliafico replaced the full-back.
Nahuel Molina – 9
At full-back, Molina turned in a wonderful display. He provided the assist on Argentina’s opening goal, created several chances from the wing and was dominant at the back.
Enzo Fernandez – 9
From his role in the defensive midfield, Fernandez was a key cog for Argentina. He helped build attacks from deep, won several tackles and set up Alvarez for the second goal of the game.
Rodrigo De Paul – 8
While Serie A fans may be used to seeing De Paul as an attacking midfielder, he played a deeper role in Argentina’s midfield. He connected with the forwards and helped his country retain possession, turning in a quiet but impressive performance
Alexis Mac Allister – 8
After a solid first 45 minutes, Mac Allister left his mark moments into the second half. In the box, he received a wonderful cross from Molina and, despite not making the cleanest of connections, directed the ball into the net to open scoring.
Angel Di Maria – 7
On the right wing, Di Maria created several chances in the first half. He gave Bartosz Bereszynski serious problems with his technical skills, but his presence decreased later in the match, and he departed in the 59th minute.
Lionel Messi – 7.5
Despite missing a penalty, Messi was dynamic from open play. His dribbling skills created several opportunities for his country, and practically every offensive chance for Argentina flowed through him.
Julian Alvarez – 7.5
Playing as the left-sided forward, Alvarez had a disappointing first half. His finishing left a lot to be desired, but he netted a stunner midway through the second 45, essentially confirming the result for his country.
