Van de Beek and Milik to Miss Euro Due to Injury, Spain Facing COVID

Euro 2020 lost two more well-known players as Donny van de Beek and Arkadiusz Milik will sit out due to injuries. The Dutch midfielder has not participated in the warm-ups and will not be able to recover from an unspecified physical issue. He will not be substituted.

Arkadiusz Milik is out because of a meniscus problem he suffered in the last matches with Olympique Marseille. He recently underwent an examination by renowned surgeon Ramon Cugat in Barcelona. Despite two weeks of rest and treatment, he did not pass the final fitness test and has been excluded from the Euro squad.

Coach Paulo Sousa elected not to replace the striker and will proceed with a 25-man roster. Poland will not have Krzysztof Piatek at their disposal too because of an ankle fracture. Therefore, they will lean heavily on their star Robert Lewandowski, supported by Dawid Kownacki, Karol Swiderski, and Jakub Swierczok.

Italy have successfully finalized the sub between Stefano Sensi and Matteo Pessina. Marco Verratti continues to rehab, and also Alessandro Florenzi did not practice Monday. The right-back is still expected to be ready to go for the Euro debut against Turkey, Sky Sport reports.

Spain manager Luis Enrique is looking for countermeasures after Sergio Busquets tested positive for COVID. He has called up five further players in an alternate bubble in case of emergency. All the other PCR tests returned negative yesterday. The newcomers are Rodrigo Moreno, Pablo Fornals, Carlos Soler, Brais Mendez, and Raul Mendez. They will have until Sunday to make a change to their squad. Busquets has left the camp to isolate, but he has not been ruled out for the Euro, as the national team is hoping for a quick recovery.
