Aston Villa Newcomer Pushes Away Bad Boy Reputation

Nicolò Zaniolo had a fine performance against Ukraine in his first start with the Azzurri in a while. He hailed the result and discussed his image in his post-game remarks to Tuttomercatoweb.

“It was paramount to take home the three points. We aren’t those seen against North Macedonia. The coach asked us to leave everything we had on the pitch because winning was the only thing that mattered. We’re happy and even played well.”

Zaniolo was asked whether such a display could be a starting point for him.

“I don’t think I ever stopped. I always do what the gaffer asks me and make myself available. I’m often labeled as somebody who’s not respectful and over the top, but that’s not the case. I’ve always been the same in any team I’ve played with.”

The attacker replied to a question about his role.

“I can star as a winger, no.10, or box-to-box. However, I’m at my best in the first one at the moment. I still need to improve something, but the manager instructed me about several things in both phases and I was comfortable on the pitch. I’m happy with this showing.”

Zaniolo looked back at the draw against North Macedonia.

“We made several mistakes, starting with me on that foul. We paid the price for those, but we were unlucky too because we had multiple clean-cut opportunities, while they capitalized on their first chance.”
