Atalanta Bid for Wingback Rebuffed by Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest reportedly turned down a formal approach from Europa League winners Atalanta for Neco Williams over the weekend. According to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Tricky Trees deemed La Dea’s opening bid worth upward of €20 million insufficient.

Atalanta can’t catch a break with clubs from the United Kingdom. After Celtic rejected as many as four offers for Matt O’Riley, Nottingham Forest knocked back a fairly lucrative proposal for the 23-year-old Welshman. In their defense, he was indispensable for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side last term.

Following an injury-hit start to the season, Williams established himself as a vital first-team component, amassing 26 appearances in the Premier League. He also has two more years left to run on his contract at the City Ground. But given his relatively modest output, it’s perhaps fair to admit Forest have overpriced the Atalanta target.

Indeed, Williams only managed one assist in 32 competitive games in 2023/24. That’s hardly a convincing statistic for an attacking-minded full-back priced over €20m. It could also be the reason why Atalanta are exploring another exciting market opportunity.

Per Romano’s update, Atalanta have started a dialogue with Brazilian giants Flamengo over 20-year-old Wesley Franca. The Brazilian youngster would command a significantly lesser fee than Williams. And it’s hard to tell whether he has less potential, considering he’s been part of the senior team since 2021

Anyway, these approaches suggest Atalanta want to replace Davide Zappacosta. Or at least relieve some pressure on the veteran, who was superb last season.
