Gian Piero Gasperini is adamant that Atalanta deserved more than a point against Inter as the two sides shared the spoils in Bergamo. A massive Serie A top-four six-pointer at the Gewiss Stadium yielded an uneventful scoreless draw.
Despite the division’s third-best attack encountering the only Serie A side to have smashed a 50-goal barrier this season, entertainment was at a premium in Bergamo. Barring sporadic attempts from both teams, the majority of the action took place in the middle of the park, though Atalanta had a couple of decent chances to snatch away the win at the death.
Luis Muriel and Mario Pasalic had two glorious opportunities to land the killing blow on Inter inside the final ten minutes of play. However, the veteran goalkeeper Samir Handanovic came up huge on both occasions to help the Nerazzurri avoid defeat and maintain their long-standing unbeaten league run.
During the post-match interview, Gasperini hailed his team’s performance, insisting Atalanta ‘deserved something more.’
“We played very well, it was a difficult match for the undoubted Inter quality, but we played them on even terms,” he told DAZN, as relayed by TUTTOmercatoWEB.
“I think if anything we did a little more than them, as Inter sat very deep and were waiting for us to make a mistake to break through our lines.
“They introduced two fresh strikers, I think perhaps overall we deserved something more from the game.“
Neither side really benefited from Sunday’s draw. While Atalanta wasted a chance to extend their lead over fifth-placed Juventus, Inter could lose their place at the summit tomorrow. If Milan fulfil their status as pre-match favourites against a lowly Spezia, Luciano Spalletti’s men will leapfrog bitter rivals to the top of the Serie A standings.
However, it is worth noting that the reigning Italian champions have a game in hand over the Rossoneri.
