Newcastle are rumored to be chasing after Robin Gosens amid their January spending spree. The German fullback has not played in months due to a thigh injury, but he is on the verge of returning. The Magpies reportedly offered him a large contract. They are also tracking his teammate Hans Hateboer.
Atalanta CEO Umberto Marino addressed the buzz before the Inter game: “I read about Newcastle pursuing one of our players every day whether it is Gosens or somebody else. It is a lottery at this point. We will see who will be linked to them tomorrow. His absence has been a significant loss for us, both technically and humanly. It is important to recover him as soon as possible.”
According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Magpies proposed to the star left-back a three-and-a-half-year deal with a €3.5M salary. It would be thrice as much what he makes currently. On the other hand, Atalanta do not want to sell him in January. The player himself wants guarantees that the club will not end in the Championship. Therefore, the deal is more likely to go down in the summer unless previous high-profile suitors resurface.
Rather than Gosens, Newcastle have better chances of landing Hateboer, the site adds. The Dutchman is keener on transferring after five years in Bergamo. Even if they sold one, La Dea would still have four wingbacks on the roster once the German international returns, which should happen in early February. They acquired Davide Zappacosta and Giuseppe Pezzella last summer.
