New Atalanta hero Gianluca Scamacca couldn’t hide his delight after opening his account at the Gewiss Stadium with a match-winning performance against Monza. The ex-Sassuolo striker scored twice to inspire Gian Piero Gasperini’s side to a thumping 3-0 victory on Saturday night.
After drawing a blank in his first two appearances for Atalanta, Scamacca rediscovered his scoring boots to topple Monza almost single-handedly. His decision to cut ties with West Ham United after just one year in the Premier League could prove a massive hit for both him and La Dea.
During the post-game interview, the new Atalanta talisman hailed the enthusiasm in Bergamo. He believes that joining Gasperini’s troops could be a career-defining decision.
“All you need to do is see tonight to realize why I came here,” the 24-year-old told DAZN, as relayed by Alfredo Pedulla. “There is so much enthusiasm here, it is wonderful playing in front of all these fans. It is an ambitious club with great players.
“I think Atalanta is the right context for me to work in, so I am happy to have come here. It is the right club for me to make the next step in my career.”
Scamacca’s heroics handed Atalanta a much-needed confidence boost following an underwhelming 2-1 defeat at Frosinone last weekend. With September’s international break around the corner, Gasperini will have more time to prepare tactics and help the new arrivals feel more comfortable. The next test falls on September 17 as they head to Tuscany to take on Fiorentina.
