Atalanta Player Ratings vs Napoli: Wasteful Hojlund Costs La Dea

At the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, Atalanta hosted Napoli for the first of three major clashes in an action-packed Serie A weekend. After taking the lead from the spot, the home side were on the right path towards cutting the gap with the league leaders. However, Victor Osimhen dragged the visitors back to the match by scoring the equalizer before setting up the winner for Eljif Elmas. We expected a strong response from La Dea in the second half, but Gian Piero Gasperini’s rarely threatened Alex Meret’s goal. So here are our ratings for the Atalanta players in their losing effort against Napoli.

Atalanta (3-4-1-2)

Juan Musso – 6

The Argentine was blameless on both Napoli goals, and had very little to do otherwise.

Rafael Toloi – 5.5

The skipper is still trying to recapture his best form following his injury layoff. He didn’t commit major mistakes, but wasn’t exactly reassuring either.

Merih Demiral – 5.5

To be fair to the former Juventus man, man-marking Osimhen has to be one of the toughest missions in Serie A today. The defender found mild success, but still lost the all-important duel that culminated in the Partenopei’s winner.

Giorgio Scalvini – 6

The teenager did well to contain and nullify Lozano’s threat on the right flank. However, we expected more from the Italian on the offensive phase following his recent exploits.

Hans Hateboer – 5

A poor display from the experienced wingback who wasted a free header in the second half. Desperately tried to block Elmas’ shot but failed to prevent the winner.

Teun Koominers – 6

A generous performance from the Dutch midfielder who operated in a deeper role this time around. Worked hard for his team’s cause, but his attempts on target were mostly blocked.

Ederson – 5.5

Similarly to his double pivot partner, the Brazilian ran hard for Atalanta, but didn’t provide the technical touch needed to unlock Luciano Spalletti’s defenses.

Joakim Maehle – 6.5

The Dane was one of the most vibrant performers for the Orobici. Almost equalized the scoring with a stunning run from the left flank. But he was arguably the main culprit on the first Napoli goal, albeit he had no chance against Osimhen in the air.

Mario Pasalic – 6

A decent outing from the former Milan man who connected well with his teammates and helped in forging chances.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4.5

The 19-year-old striker still has to sharpen his finishing touch. Atalanta produced very few chances throughout the match, and on two of these rare occasions, the Dane failed to convert them to goals.

Ademola Lookman – 7

A formidable display from Atalanta’s undisputed star of the season. Scored one of the finest spot kicks you’ll ever witness, and created two clear-cut chances that were poorly wasted by Hojlund.

Atalanta Substitutes

Ruslan Malinovskyi – 5.5

The Ukrainian is enduring a difficult campaign, suddenly becoming an afterthought in Bergamo. This was his chance to make an impact in a top clash, but he was arguably a downgrade on Pasalic.

Duvan Zapata – 5.5

Another Atalanta player who isn’t enjoying himself this season. The Colombian was left starving for service during his second half cameo.

Jeremie Boga – N/A

Marten de Roon – N/A

Brandon Soppy – N/A
