Atalanta Starlet Undergoes ACL Surgery, Ruled Out of Euro 2024

Highly-rated Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini will skip the upcoming European Championship due to a nasty anterior cruciate ligament injury. La Dea released an official statement regarding his fitness status, conveying the 20-year-old underwent ‘successful’ surgery on Tuesday via their website.

Scalvini was supposed to be one of Luciano Spalletti’s crucial players at Euro 2024. However, Italy will have to try to defend their title without the Atalanta starlet, who faces up to six months on the sidelines. In addition to the prodigious center-back, Gli Azzurri will be without Francesco Acerbi.

Ominously for Atalanta, Scalvini may only return to action in 2025. He was one of Gian Piero Gasperini’s most trusted first-team stars in 2023/24, making 44 appearances across all competitions. Despite his position, the youngster had five goal contributions, scoring twice and chipping in with three assists.

Scalvini was on the scoresheet as Atalanta lost 3-2 to Fiorentina on the final Serie A weekend before picking up an ACL injury towards the end of the game. He’ll immediately embark on rehabilitation and treatment to accelerate his recovery. But it will take time, suggesting La Dea may need to scour the market for a new center-back this summer.

Atalanta purchased Isak Hien from Hellas Verona last winter. But with Scalvini facing a lengthy spell in the treatment room, Gasperini must dive back into the market to fill the void. Meanwhile, the Italians’ injury rules out the possibility of a summer departure amid genuine interest from several Serie A clubs, including Inter and Juventus.
