Atalanta Star Hints at Departure Amid Clash with Coach

Tensions continue to flare at Atalanta as Alejandro Gomez took it to Instagram to address his coach’s words after the Fiorentina game: “Dear fans, I write here because I do not have any other way to defend myself and speak to you. I just wanted to say that you will know the truth about everything once I leave. You know me and what kind of person I am. I love you, your captain.”

Gian Piero Gasperini attacked him again the day before: “We excluded him today because we are trying to build an Atalanta that is less dependent on him. I do not know how we will move forward with him, he is a great footballer. He has played about 195 matches out of 200 since I have been here, sometimes his role was difficult to sustain, the trust must be at the foundation of everything. It is up to the management to decide what to do in January.” The manager instead exonerated Josip Ilicic from the recent events, saying that he was caught in the middle of the rift for no reason.

Our view

While some arguments between a gaffer and a star player could be normal during a long season, especially when things are not going all that well, the situation seems to have spiraled out of control at Atalanta and a shocking divorce with Gomez, who has been their symbol for few years, now seems very much like a real possibility.
