Atalanta Striker Picks Up Nasty Injury Against Parma

Atalanta suffered a dismal 4-1 defeat to Parma in Sunday’s pre-season friendly at the Tardini Stadium, but the result wasn’t the only problem for La Dea. Star striker Gianluca Scamacca picked up a severe knee injury at the start of the second half and could face a lengthy spell in the treatment room.

Scamacca featured for Italy at EURO 2024, but it wasn’t a memorable tournament for the Atalanta star by any stretch of the imagination. After facing harsh criticism for his underwhelming showings in Germany, the former Sassuolo man returned to the Gewiss Stadium, searching for redemption.

However, a potentially long-term injury threatens to hinder the 25-year-old’s bid to get back on track. Atalanta were 2-1 down against Parma when Scamacca suffered a nasty-looking knee problem. Unable to put any weight on his left knee, the robust center-forward limped off the pitch, assisted by the medical staff.

The player will undergo extensive scans in the coming days to determine the full extent of the injury, with Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini awaiting test results with bated breath. Scamacca was superb in his first season at the Gewiss Stadium last term, helping La Deal clinch a top-four finish in Serie A and lift the Europa League title.

He clocked up 19 goals and eight assists across 44 competitive appearances for Atalanta in 2023/24. With the injury putting Scamcca at risk of staying on the sidelines for a considerable amount of time, the Bergamo outfit may have to readjust their market strategies to fill the potential gap in the final third.

UPDATE: The striker has torn the ACL, the MCL, and a meniscus and will undergo surgery in Rome on Monday, Mediaset and multiple sources report.
