Problems keep piling up for Atalanta at the start of the new campaign as Marco Brescianini faces a potentially lengthy spell on the sidelines. The former Frosinone midfielder picked up an injury during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Bologna at Renato Dall’Ara.
Brescianini tried to break the deadlock on the stroke of halftime when he latched on to Sead Kolasinac’s cut-back on the edge of the six-yard box. Despite a delightful first touch, the Atalanta star caught the turf as he was trying to pull the trigger, injuring himself in the process.
The 24-year-old immediately asked for medical attention. However, he refused to leave the pitch despite being treated near the end-line. Moments later, he collapsed to the ground again and had to hobble off the field in pain, with Lazar Samardzic taking his place.
Samardzic would go on to save Atalanta with a late screamer. But Brescianini’s suspected thigh problem was the last thing Gian Piero Gasperini needed amid a severe injury crisis in Bergamo.
Atalanta have been without Isak Hien, Rafael Toloi, Giorgio Scalvini, and Gianluca Scamacca in recent games. Summer arrival Nicolo Zaniolo is still not 100%, though he participated in last night’s clash. He came off the bench in the second half but didn’t offer much.
It was another frustrating match for Atalanta as they failed to beat 10-man Bologna, days after Como shockingly triumphed at the Gewiss Stadium 3-2. There’s no time for regrets as Gasperini’s men must focus on the upcoming Champions League encounter against Shakhtar Donetsk.
