Atalanta and Remo Freuler have come to terms on a new contract that will last until 2024. His previous one would have expired in June 2022. The club could have activated an option to prolong it for one more season. Instead, the parties negotiated a new deal.
The Swiss international was recently tipped to be on Roma’s radar, as they are searching for a midfielder. The turn of events will make sure he will not leave in January. Moreover, Atalanta will be able in a position of strength if another team requests Freuler next summer. Some Bundesliga sides are keeping tabs on him.
With the move, his price tag will rise to €20/25M, Tuttomercatoweb informs. It would be a hefty sum for a 29-year-old. The midfielder will likely spend a few more years in Bergamo. Gian Piero Gasperini has often had trouble integrating new pieces into his schemes, although Teun Koopmeiners has made an impact almost right away.
The front office had until the end of the year to pick up the option, which they would have done without the new understanding. Atalanta informed Freuler of the interest from Roma, but he decided to stay, also because he recently became a father. He received a slight pay bump. The Orobici prefer not to have players entering the final year of their contract before sorting their future.
Freuler has been with Nerazzurri since 2016 when he joined from Luzern. He has accumulated 237 appearances, scoring 21 times and providing 18 assists. He has 40 caps with his national team.
