Atalanta Undecided About Full-Back’s Future as Lazio Look to Pounce

Emil Holm’s future could be among the hottest topics this summer as Atalanta remain unsure whether to trigger a buyout clause in his loan deal. According to Rai Sport’s journalist Paolo Paganini via Footballskanalen, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men hesitate to splash out €8.3 million to sign the Spezia loanee outright following the full-back’s topsy-turvy campaign.

Holm made a name for himself in Serie A with Spezia. After the Ligurian outfit dropped to Serie B, he found safe haven in Bergamo, joining Atalanta on loan last summer. However, the Swedish defender couldn’t dislodge Davide Zappacosta from Gasperini’s starting XI.

While 22 Serie A appearances in 2023/24 suggest Atalanta trusted Holm to take care of the right-back position, the reality was quite different. The 24-year-old made only 12 league starts, racking up a goal and three assists. As a result, he may not stay at the Gewiss Stadium beyond the summer.

If he returns to Spezia, it would only be temporary. Several Italian clubs are waiting for Atalanta to make up their minds with bated breath. Lazio, Juventus, and Inter are keeping close tabs on Holm. As the queue lengthens, La Dea must wrap their head around this as soon as possible.

Should Atalanta decide against purchasing Holm, his next destination could be Lazio. Igor Tudor is far from convinced by the likes of Elseid Hysaj, Luca Pellegrini, and Manuel Lazzari. He would use a player of Holm’s characteristics. Given the price, it makes perfect sense that he monitors the situation.
