Bayern Breeze Past Chelsea To Book Barcelona Quarter-Final

Chelsea went into tonight’s Champions League game in Germany with a 3-0 aggregate deficit. Frank Lampard on the back of last week’s FA Cup disappointment was hoping for a “miracle” in Munich, but his side produced quite the opposite.

Bayern were ahead on 10 minutes when VAR judged Robert Lewandowski to have been fouled inside the box, which the Pole then converted.

Chelsea had very little to offer in the opening stages and found themselves two behind when Lewandowski turned provider for Ivan Perisic, who fired a low shot into the bottom right corner.

Lampard’s side now 5-0 behind on aggregate pushed for any sort of way back into the tie. They looked like they had that when Callum Hudson-Odoi converted, only for VAR to rule against Chelsea for a second time.

It would be Tammy Abraham that would score Chelsea’s only goal of the night, finishing from close range on the cusp of half-time for 2-1.

The second-half became much more subdued. Both teams were going for more goals but when Bayern started to pile on the substitutions, they started to edge the tie once again – Lampard made just one change on the night, bringing on Olivier Giroud with 9 minutes to play.

Before that, Corentin Tolisso scored just minutes after coming on Bayern – Lewandowski again with the assist.

Now with the game out of sight, Chelsea and Lampard looked deject. But they kept at it, and had half-chances through Hudson-Odoi and Reece James, but never really troubled the Bayern defense.

A fourth and final goal sealed Chelsea’s fate, Lewandowski capping a fine performance with an equally fine header into the bottom right corner, latching onto the wide ball from Alvaro Odriozola.

Bayern progress to a Quarter-Final tie with Barcelona – who cruised past Napoli to book their place among the elite eight of Europe.
