Sassuolo crashed out of the Coppa Italia, succumbing to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of minnows Modena in the Round of 64 stage, and Domenico Berardi grabbed the headlines for what happened afterward. The Canarini progressed thanks to Diego Falcinelli’s opener followed by 24-year-old Nicola Mosti’s brace. Despite the attacker’s successful first-half penalty and Kaan Ayhan’s sitter at the death, the Neroverdi could not escape defeat in a largely frustrating performance.
The Emilian derby was the scene of great distraught for the Neroverdi, who after all fell to their Serie B counterparts. Berardi emerged in the spotlight for his actions after the encounter outside the Stadio Alberto Braglia.
As Sportmediaset reports, the 28-year-old forward was severely targeted during and after the match, with insults hurled relentlessly at him. Reacting to which, he sought confrontation with one fan in particular. Following criticism and insults directed at him and his family, Berardi was initially held back by people around him, before he managed to break through and seek revenge against the accused for his verbal doings.

Nevertheless, the Sassuolo icon apologized for his actions with a statement.
“I would like to apologize for what happened today at the exit of the stadium after the match against Modena. We are professionals and above all we must be examples for the youngest and children. Today, clearly, I failed to behave in such way. This is because the things dearest to me off the pitch, such as my family, my wife and my son, were targeted and that deeply hurt me.”
The Neroverdi had made it to the quarter-finals last season and were sent packing by Juventus via a 1-2 loss in Turin.
