Bologna Fans Aim High: “Take Us to Europe, Thiago Motta”

Bologna continued their upturn of form by going unbeaten for an eighth successive Serie A game, ousting newly-promoted Frosinone 2-1 at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. Early strikes by Lewis Ferguson and Lorenzo De Silvestri proved enough for Thiago Motta’s men, although Matias Soulé struck a late consolation goal in the form of a penalty.

Thiago Motta has won praise for his managerial success and thanked the support he has received so far in his post-match press conference (via TuttoBolognaweb).

“I thank the public, it’s fantastic, we play for them. The fans have the right to ask for anything and as always, I promise that we will give our best. Today we enjoy the victory and from tomorrow we will think about the next one against Sassuolo, which were able to beat Inter and Juventus. We will go there to fight our battle.”

The Rossoblù coach then took stock of the win over Frosinone.

“It was an important victory against a good team. We started well, then the match got complicated but we did well to maintain the result trying to get the third goal. The credit once again goes to the boys. We can improve in many aspects. We didn’t manage to score again and we conceded the penalty, but the team tried to continue playing, understanding when it was important to attack or gather behind to defend.”

Motta heaped praise on two significant players within his squad, one of them being Alexis Saelemaekers, who received his first start against Frosinone. He also had his say on Jesper Karlsson, who is yet to hit it off at his new club.

“Saelemaekers had a good performance; he can still improve but I’m happy. He can play many roles, today against a team that presses a lot he had to occupy certain spaces and he did well,” before shedding light on Riccardo Orsolini: “Riccardo isn’t convinced about playing on the left, but I am. He demonstrated it by coming close to scoring in the second half. He has a great shot. For me he can also do very well on the left side but he needs to be convinced of it. I don’t put a player in a role if he doesn’t feel it because it doesn’t work in the end .”

“Karlsson? He must continue to work with simplicity. The competition is high, he is working well and he can improve. His opportunity will also come.”

The win against Frosinone is just a third for the Rossoblù this season, as this season’s draw specialists look to register a European finish. Chants rang around the Dall’Ara at the final whistle: “Take us, take us, take us to Europe, Thiago Motta take us to Europe.”
