Bologna Ready to Throw Swedish Right-Back Serie A Lifeline

Bologna could offer Emil Holm a lifeline in Serie A after Atalanta decided against purchasing the Spezia loanee at the end of 2023/24. Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims the Rossoblu have taken an interest in the Sweden international amid an imminent risk of losing Riccardo Calafiori to Juventus.

Holm spent last season on loan at Atalanta, registering 32 appearances for the Bergamo outfit. But unlike Charles De Ketelaere, whose temporary move from Milan is about to become permanent, the 24-year-old will return to Spezia. However, he might not stay in Serie B for long, with Bologna looking to bring him to Renato Dall’Ara.

Despite only recently extending Charalampos Lykogiannis’ contract for another season, Bologna are in the market for a new full-back. That may have everything to do with Juventus’ continuous effort to lure Calafiori to Turin after hiring Thiago Motta as their new manager.

Atalanta passed on the opportunity to sign Holm permanently for €8.3 million despite already spending €2.5m for the one-season loan. However, Bologna may need to fork out up to €12m to land the Goteborg youth academy graduate.

It will be a busy summer for Bologna. As they seem destined to lose Joshua Zirkzee and Calafiori, Vincenzo Italiano’s men must dive into the market to keep the squad competitive ahead of their Champions League debut. Holm’s potential arrival could be one of many.

Bologna opted not to sign Milan loanee Alexis Saelemaekers and will be out to reinforce the wing. Holm can play higher up the pitch. But it’s hard to expect him to take the Belgian’s place.
