Bologna Talisman Receive Last-Gasp Netherlands Call-Up for Euro 2024

Milan target Joshua Zirkzee has received the Netherlands call-up for Euro 2024 as Ronald Koeman counts on the Bologna ace to fill the vacancy left by Teun Koopmeiners’ injury. Dutch outfit De Telegraaf reports the 23-year-old has made the cut at the 11th hour.

Zirkzee has never received a senior call-up despite tallying a respectable seven goals in 19 caps for the Under-21 side. He went from strength to strength for Bologna last season, clocking up an eye-catching 12 goals and seven assists in 37 competitive appearances.

He was Thiago Motta’s standout performer as Bologna did the unthinkable, beating Roma and Napoli, among others, to a coveted Champions League finish. As a result, he’s one of Europe’s most sought-after prospects, with Milan particularly interested in his services.

While negotiations between Zirkze’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, and the Rossoneri proceed at a slow pace, the versatile forward has a more pressing matter to attend to. The Bologna star could make his senior debut for the Netherlands at Euro 2024.

It’s no small feat, considering these tournaments often serve as a springboard for young talents to showcase their abilities and gain attention from top clubs. Unfortunately for Bologna, Zirkzee’s €40 million release clause means they can’t expect to increase their profit in case he impresses in Germany.

But it would strengthen Joorabchian’s determination to extort as much money as possible from his potential suitors. The only certainty is that Zirkzee will ply his trade outside Bologna next term.
