Borussia Dortmund Taking Notice of Sassuolo Defender

Martin Erlic didn’t need much time to become a linchpin at Sassuolo following the summer switch from Spezia. His strong showings have earned him a spot in the Croatia squad for the World Cup. He’s starting to generate some transfer market buzz too. Borussia Dortmund recently sent some scouts to watch him closely, Tuttomercatoweb informs.

The Neroverdi acted very early to snatch him. They actually acquired him for €3.5M two years ago and left him on loan to Liguria in the past campaign. They are bound to register a massive profit once they decide to cash in on him, but it’s unlikely to happen soon.

Erlic has plenty of Serie A experience, but he’s only 24. Sassuolo originally put him under contract in 2015, but they lost control of him after a pair of loan spells. They managed to buy him back for a relatively low fee.

The 24-year-old has 67 appearances in the Italian league, with 5 goals and 2 assists, plus 3 caps with Croatia. Borussia Dortmund aren’t the only ones keeping tabs on him. Emissaries of other European clubs have been spotted on the stands of the Mapei Stadium in the last few matches, the publication adds.

Our Take on Erlic

He doesn’t get much fanfare, but he’s been rock-solid in the last couple of seasons. Perhaps not next summer, and Sassuolo tend to hold onto players whose price tags they believe could further balloon, but he should definitely be an option for top teams down the line. He’s massive and diligent, he’s accustomed to both styles of defenses, and he’s just now entering his prime.
