Cafu Didn’t Want to Believe in Italy’s World Cup Absence

Brazil legend Cafu, who spent most of his playing career in Italy following his initial years in the Amazon country, still finds it hard to believe the Azzurri are missing out on the World Cup in Qatar.

Italy are missing their second World Cup in a row after being eliminated in the second round qualification play-offs in 2017 by Sweden 1-0 over two legs. It would be the same scoreline North Macedonia would go on to eliminate them with this time around.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via FCinterNews), Cafu didn’t hold back from expressing his surprise at Italy’s absence.

“Eh it’s hard. And it is also the second time (in as many World Cups). I didn’t want to believe it.”

Cafu spent the latter years of his career in Italy, first with Roma before jumping ship to Milan and etching himself as a fan favorite. He won two Serie A titles with the two clubs, and also a UEFA Champions League title with the Rossoneri, among a host of other accolades.
