Buffon Slams Italian Media, Cites Thiago Motta as Example

Parma shot-stopper Gianluigi Buffon, who is still punching above his weight at 45, has criticized the Italian media for not understanding the footballing landscape, or jigsaw, as he calls it. Buffon gave the example of Thiago Motta, who was denounced by the press earlier in his career for being handed the number 10 jersey, previously worn by legends such as Francesco Totti and Roberto Baggio.

Speaking to Christian Vieiri’s Bobo TV (via FCInterNews), Buffon hit out at the Italian media for their lack of understanding.

“In Italy they don’t understand a thing and do you know when I understood it? When Thiago Motta was contesting the national team. And I said but these guys don’t understand a football jigsaw, this is the strongest player in the space, it has an enormous specific weight and they contested Thiago Motta.”

Motta shared the Azzurri colors with Buffon for five years, from 2011 to 2016, announcing his retirement after the EURO 2016 tournament, when Italy crashed out at the hands of Germany on penalties.
