Buongiorno Takes Medicals Ahead of Napoli Transfer

Alessandro Buongiorno has completed the physical tests and will soon ink the contract that will tie him to Napoli until 2029. Only the celebratory tweet from president Aurelio De Laurentiis is missing for the move to become official.

Per Corriere dello Sport, the Azzurri will disburse €35/40M including add-ons for the highly-rated defender. He’s their second addition in the back after Rafa Marin and the third overall. They recently onboarded Leonardo Spinazzola on a free transfer.

Buongiorno has been a priority for Napoli since they hired Antonio Conte. They staved off a late interference by Inter, which would have had enough resources only after a big sale. He’ll make €2.5M per year. There’ll be €70M release clause in his contract. However, it’ll be valid only from 2027 and for foreign teams. The teams paid €1.2M in commissions, Alfredo Pedullà relays.

The Torino product took off in particular after Perr Schuurs went down with an ACL tear and he moved to the middle of a three-man defense.

The Azzurri might not be done adding to their rearguard. They are very keen on Mario Hermoso. However, they want to part ways with at least one among Natan, Juan Jesus, or Leo Ostigard before signing a new man, Gianluca Di Marzio relays.

Our Take on Napoli and Buongiorno

It’s not easy to persuade players of this caliber without participating in the Champions League, but Conte is a draw on his own. It helps that he’s coming from a minnow, so his wages weren’t an issue, and that he didn’t feature in Euro 2024. The fee was robust, and it’s another strong sale for Torino, but it might end up being very reasonable considering the figures for Riccardo Calafiori and other defenders switching sides abroad.
