Cagliari performed an out-of-this-world comeback against Frosinone to post their first Serie A victory of the 2023/24 season. Claudio Ranieri’s men overhauled a 3-0 deficit inside the last 20 minutes of play to run out 4-3 victors at Unipol Domus.
Matias Soule’s unanswered first-half double promised another forgettable afternoon for Cagliari. Marco Brescianini’s strike at the beginning of the second half should have sealed the deal for Frosinone. However, Cagliari showed mental fortitude unseen in recent Serie A history.
Going into stoppages 3-2 down, Cagliari turned to their long-serving striker Leonardo Pavoletti to provide a rescue. The 34-year-old scored an injury-time brace to complete the turnaround with his first goals of the season.
In addition to getting Cagliari off the mark, Paveloti’s heroics might have saved Ranieri’s job. Speaking to the press in the aftermath, the veteran refused to hide his delight.
“It’s beautiful, it’s so sweaty, so much wanted this victory, especially with a double that I haven’t done for twenty years (laughs). It’s great to win like this,” Pavelotti told DAZN, as quoted by Tuttomercatoweb.
“The heart of Cagliari was the protagonist at the end of last season, and it’s returning. Thanks to the coach and thanks to the heart and the group, we can save ourselves. We have a lot of weapons, the coach is good at exploiting us at the right moments.“
