Italian football icon Fabio Capello has given his say on what he thinks makes Mike Maignan a more effective goalkeeper than Thibaut Courtois. Having recently made a comeback from an injury, Maignan has punched above his weight since returning to the first team – putting in tour de force displays against Napoli in particular.
In Sky Sport’s post-match interview, Capello commented on the decisiveness of Maignan between the sticks.
“Courtois or Maignan? It seems to me that the Milan goalkeeper has something more with the ball at his feet, he seems to me faster and more reactive. Courtois is taller and bigger, but in my opinion Maignan is different in terms of reactivity.”
He then shed light on Maignan’s brilliant save against Di Lorenzo at San Siro, followed by his penalty save which denied Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the second leg.
“The save he made on Di Lorenzo in the first leg is fundamental. This evening the penalty in the 81st minute. The shot was strong. He parried it. It looks like he’s a libero with the ball at his feet.”
27-year-old Maignan has been one of the best performing Rossoneri players in recent weeks. He has kept five clean sheets in ten appearances since returning from injury.
