Chiellini Announces End of His Juventus Stay as Player

Giorgio Chiellini corroborated the chatter leading up to the Coppa Italia final and confirmed that he would leave Juventus at the end of the season: “I am sorry to bid farewell after the first trophyless campaign in ten years, but I have to accept that. I will celebrate Monday and say goodbye to the Stadium, even though I might play some minutes in Florence too. It is time to pass the torch to the youngsters.”

The defender talked to SportMediaset: “I move on with joy and serenity and will be forever the first fan of this team. This was 100 percent my choice. Something did not work out in 2021-2022. We are distant from the best side, but the analysis must be broader. For instance, Milan are worse than Inter, but they are ahead. We need better consistency in our character and desire, which are part of our DNA. The coach is the best possible person to convey this message. Life is made of cycles, and you have to find the energy to restart. The most important thing is to be aware of the process. We finished 7th twice in the past, and we bounced back.”

Chiellini stopped short of announcing his retirement, as he might keep playing abroad after departing Juventus. He told Sky: “I will quit the Bianconeri and the national team, and then I will decide my next step with my two families, the one at home and the club. I have always dreamed of bowing out on top, and I am happy to be able to do so. My love story with the Old Lady will continue for a long time. I would like to stay as an executive, but I have a lot to learn. I will take my time to decide.”
