De Laurentiis Prioritizes Luis Enrique to Succeed Spalletti

Luciano Spalletti’s future at Napoli has become increasingly hazy in recent weeks, and the Partenopei, led by president Aurelio De Laurentiis, reportedly have two world-class tacticians already shortlisted to potentially replace the Certaldo-born manager.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the chief has Luis Enrique and ex-Inter manager Antonio Conte in sights, with the former in pole position to arrive in Campania. De Laurentiis reportedly recognizes Enrique as Spalletti’s successor, given the former Barcelona coach’s expertise at the highest levels, on both the club and international level.

A gentleman’s contract worth €10m net per season until 2025 has already been tabled by Napoli to Enrique, reports Corriere dello Sport.

53-year-old Conte is another potential candidate who understands Napoli’s style of play, making him an apt manager as per De Laurentiis. However, his allegiances with Juventus and Inter might prove to be a gamechanger despite the four-time Scudetto winner’s strong reputation in Italy.

Yet, despite the links, it is their salaries that worry the Azzurri the most – that perhaps being the ultimate reason why the relationship with Spalletti has dulled since negotiation talk emerged into the spotlight, after De Laurentiis unilaterally extended the manager’s contract without consultation.

Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini, free agent Julian Nagelsmann and Fiorentina’s Vincenzo Italiano are also candidates for De Laurentiis.
