De Laurentiis Gloats for Scudetto and Raises the Bar

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis didn’t follow the team to Udine but watched the match along and the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. He took the floor after the Azzurri sealed the title with a draw (via La Gazzetta dello Sport).

“Today is the crowning achievement of a 33-year-long wait. I said when I bought the team that it would take 20 years to win the Scudetto. We did it two seasons earlier. What we’ll aim to do now is to repeat and take home the Champions League. We needed fresh air last summer. My directors were excellent in executing this overhaul. This is a starting point and not the finish line.”

De Laurentiis praised Luciano Spalletti and the fans.

“He’s a true man that works with great awareness and abnegation. I will keep a hold of him. We will start anew with him because the project continues even though this season is worthy of a movie. In fact, we’ve been filming the team since day one. A great flick will come out of it.”

“This victory belongs to the city, and that’s why I wanted to involve our faithful here. I told the League and the TV broadcasters that it wouldn’t hurt them if this experiment happened elsewhere too. Football needs its people.”

De Laurentiis aims to broaden Napoli’s fan base.

“We are 83 million across the world. We are spreading. I’m happy for the younger generations that didn’t witness Maradona’s years and can enjoy the title now. This sport is complex and filled with obstacles and enemies. We forged ahead with our method that’s different from the system, and that’s why it took us longer. We don’t want to stop now. Our jewels aren’t for sale.”
