De Laurentiis Has His Own Recipe for Saving Football

Napoli are on their way to winning the Scudetto, but Aurelio De Laurentiis is displeased with how the football system works in general. He voiced his concerns to Radio 24 (via SportMediaset).

“For the way it currently is, it’s dead in my opinion. There are too many matches, the players are worn out, and their price tags plummet when they suffer serious injuries. But the market is always demanding, and that doesn’t jibe with the producing factors. We have never evolved despite the large fan base. We are lagging behind other sports because don’t innovate.”

The Napoli owner is in favor of changing the Serie A format.

“We had 16 teams in 1986. We are at 20 now and, if we look at the numbers, nobody cares about some matches. Each team should be responsible for selling virtual tickets using through the existent platforms, giving a percentage to the other sides.”

De Laurentiis slammed the Super League but proposed something similar.

“I told Andrea Agnelli that I would never join. He wanted it to be only for elite teams. Still, the current UEFA competitions don’t work either. Nobody wants to participate in the Europa and Conference League. They cash in €800M, and we don’t know where they end up. We should have a European championship that rake in €10B where the top six teams in each country compete against each other in in single elimination games. The NBA and the NFL reach those numbers, but we don’t. The fans want to see interesting games. It’s no coincidence that they don’t broadcast some matches in England.”
