Aurelio De Laurentiis etched his name in the history books after bringing the Scudetto back to Napoli after 33 years, but he has even more ambitious plans, as he told La Repubblica.
“Football is the most ancient sport in the world. It’s so old that it would be wrong for it to stay as it is. First of all, we have a huge problem with stadiums, which are obsolete for the most part. The view is bad. I’d like to bring more families. Maybe we could officiate weddings and first Holy Communions there. Arenas are underutilized and underestimated, plus it would generate profits.”
The Napoli owner would like to overhaul the schedule.
“Why are we playing during the winter, while it’s raining or hailing? We should start the season in April. We should have seven-month campaigns, and then the footballers would rest or play with the national teams from November to March. If I have African internationals on the squad, why should I lose them for a month? UEFA and FIFA are egocentric and don’t discuss these issues.”
De Laurentiis revealed the key to their success.
“Some things didn’t convince me when Carlo Ancelotti and Gennaro Gattuso were on the bench. I finally got rid of players that were demotivated and couldn’t carry me where I wanted to go.
