Roberto De Zerbi hasn’t shut the door to a return to Serie A but implied it won’t happen next summer in his pre-game presser ahead of the clash with Roma in the Europa League’s Round of 16 (via Eurosport).
“It’s not true that I don’t think about Italy. It’s my home country. However, I do what makes me happy. That’s being at Brighton at this stage. I’m lucky enough to be in a team that lets me to play in these competitions and gives me satisfaction. I find good things in the players I coach even when we lose. I’ll be back down the line, but I don’t know when. There is no prejudice on my part.”
De Zerbi looked back at his exit.
“I personally made the call to go to Shakhtar Donetsk three years ago to forge a path outside of Italy. Without going into detail, there was some stuff I didn’t like, and I was looking for something different. I’m not a genius nor better than anybody else. I’m surely not scared by the hard work and am not lacking the courage to do things, right or wrong, that others don’t. I live for football, and that’s what making the difference in my career.”
De Zerbi has been linked to all sorts of teams, for instance Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Milan. However, Brighton wish to keep him and won’t facilitate his departure. Whoever wants him will have to activate a €14M release clause, SportMediaset informs.
