New Milan signing Sergino Dest has opened up about his move to Serie A following a quickfire transfer that no one anticipated. Having lost his place under Xavi Hernandez at Barcelona, the American-Dutch wingback was looking for a club to rack in regular playing minutes, and he didn’t hesitate in responding to the Rossoneri call.
The defender spoke to Milan TV (via MilanNews) in his interview, taking the opportunity to talk about the switch, the plans of retaining the Scudetto title, his playing style, and a host of other things.
“It all happened very quickly, in just one day. I had to make a decision in a hurry and change my life, team, country and culture. I love Milan, it’s a club I always wanted to play for as a boy. I am happy and honored to start playing for this side, I will give my best.”
The wingback looks eagerly towards the new season, with the opportunity to contribute to a potential second successive title for the Rossoneri.
“I have never played in Italy but I have seen some Serie A matches. It is a high-level championship and we wlill face excellent teams, but we have the Scudetto on our chest and we must keep it for next season as well.”
He also shed light on his favorite position on the pitch.
“At Ajax, I starred as a winger and as a full-back. Moving to the more defensive role was a good idea it allowed me to show my qualities in both phases. I have good resistance and I can cover the whole flank. For me, full-back is the most congenial role, both on the right and on the left. This helped me become a professional.”
Dest also took stock of the legends to have played with Milan, citing a couple of Brazilian icons as his favorites.
“Many champions played here, but Ronaldinho was the best for me. He was a joy to see. I really like the Brazilians who spent time here in the past. That group included Kaká, Ronaldinho and others. I was almost obsessed with them, I was always watching them.”
Dest could make his Rossoneri debut in the first Derby della Madonnina of the season on Saturday, as Milan welcome Inter as hosts in San Siro.
